Donkey Time

Have you ever met a donkey?  I really hadn't until last Sunday when I met a lovely little donkey named Forrest.  My friend Shea bought Forrest as a gift for her dad.  How thoughtful:)

Forrest is friendly.

Forrest is kind.

Forrest is curious.

Forrest needs help removing strange objects from his forehead.
(check out my sister's bump, whoa)

If I had a little plot of land, I think I might get my own donkey.

Fun fact of the day:  There is actually a specific area of the brain known as the bilateral vomitation center. It notes when our tummy is upset and makes the final decision whether to barf or not to barf.

Quotes From Dad

My dad is super cool.  Everyone likes him.  He is funny, and goofy, and kind and giving.  He's had a mustache for about 40 years and likes to wear a yellow hoodie with surf boards on it that says "Santa Monica", and sometimes he tucks in his sweaters.  He tells a lot of jokes, and says some pretty hilarious stuff.  Here are some examples:

Me - "Dad, what are you getting mom for Christmas?"
Dad- "candy and tater chips"

Mom - "Mike, what was the name of the special guest at the bluegrass Christmas show we went to at the Ryman last night?"
Dad -  "Mick Jagger"

He's a winner!

Fun face of the day:   The space between your pointer finger and thumb is called the "purlicue."

Gah- Roosss

Have you ever drained and rinsed a can of black beans?  What is that stuff?  And why does it get foamy when you rinse them?  Am I buying the wrong kind of black beans?

Fun fact of the day:  Ben Franklin's formal education ended at ten years old.

Christmas List

Here are a few of the things I wouldn't mind Santa leaving under my tree this year:

  • Yonanas Ice Cream Treat Maker - Bed Bath & Beyond.  This thing makes fro-yo out of frozen bananas.  Wow!

  • A new rug - Pottery Barn.

  • This cute jacket from Gap.

  • A lovely red leather cross-body bag.  This one is Fossil.

  • One of these ceramic iPod speakers from West Elm.  I like the fox, but there is an owl too.

Fun fact of the day:  One quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet.

Maddie and Me

This is one of my favorite things.

I love Maddie's tiny feet and how 90% of the time she looks like she is asleep.  I think this is just the most brilliant thing.  And now she has her own book.  I want.

I like to think Maddie and I are similar creatures.  Anything look similar to you?

Yep, two peas in a pod, or in a giant watermelon on the side of the highway in Mississippi :)

Fun fact of the day:  The Salem Witch trials did not start in Salem, MA. They started in Salem Village, now known as Danvers.

I Have Fine Taste

Last week at Sheffield's Antique Mall, I bought these for $15.

Today on One Kings Lane I find these for $395, retail price of $650!

Okay, so mine aren't Royal Dalton, but they are a dead ringer.  Actually, I like mine better.  Good find if I do say so myself:)

Fun fact of the day:  The hood ornament of a Rolls Royce is named "The Spirit of Ecstasy."

Downtown Dining Week Night #1: Eighty3

Downtown Dining Week is here!  Second only to Christmas, it is such a magical time of year for me!

If you know me, you know I like to eat.  And, getting my fine-dining on is one of my favorite past times.  I got some of the girls together and made reservations about a month ago.  There are a ton of restaurants participating this year and all pre-fix menus cost $20.12.  I love a bargain:)  Hurry up and make your reservations, the fun is over on Nov 11.

Night #1 - Eighty3
Rating - **** (4 out of 5 stars)

The food was really delicious, but Eighty3 lost one star due to the wacky service and melted ice cream.  Here are some photos from our experience:

Menu - they didn't have the salted caramel ice cream.  Our waitress told us the ice cream was store-bought, but not "the cheap stuff".  Good to know.  We all had the fried green tomato slider as our appetizer, it was really good.  The chef offered to send us the recipe for the jalapeno ketchup:)

To add to the wackiness there was a table of Japanese food critics who were taking pictures of french fries.  This was my attempt at nonchalantly snapping a pic of them.
Main course shrimp and grits were amazing!

For dessert blueberry bread pudding and vanilla ice cream. I would rather have had my ice cream still frozen,  but that's just me.

Fun fact of the day:  When lightning strikes the ground, it will sometimes fuse the soil into hollow, glass-lined tubes called a "fulgurite." This is especially common if lightning strikes a sandy area such as a beach.

Mother's Day Weekend

So it isn't May, who cares!  My Mom visited me in Memphis this weekend, we had a great time and the weather was amazing.  We shopped, and ate, and shopped, and ate and then she gave me cleaning tips.  This happens every time I tell you, never clean enough for your mother:)

We started out Saturday in Collierville.  Mom has never been, so we visited the square, had lunch, went to baby boutiques and took on the challenge that is Sheffield's Antique Mall.

I got these little beauties for $15!

Love this paint scheme, but I don't have room for another dresser.

Linda really liked the square:)
We enjoyed an extra hour of sleep and then headed back out on Sunday to hit up the few shops we didn't get to on Saturday.  It was an East Memphis kind of day.  We started out with lunch at Gus's where we sat next to Penny Hardaway, we played it cool and didn't even sneak a picture of him.  Then hit up the EM regulars, Target and Pottery Barn Outlet, before heading to Saddle Creek to finish out the shopping extravaganza.
Weekend synopsis:  I gained 5 lbs, burned up a tank of gas, and am going to have the best dressed nephew east of the Mississippi (and probably west of it too).
Fun fact of the day:  Jupiter has 63 moons.

Five Things For Friday

1.  I had dessert at lunch today.  I really don't understand why I keep gaining weight?  Oh hey there Kristen, you're my BFF (best foodie friend).

2.  Two weeks ago I took ten items to Sugar Plum Consignments.  As of today nine of my items have sold and I get to pick up a check:)  I'm pretty excited about it.  So, I'm dropping off some more items this weekend.  I haven't had any luck with purchasing anything there yet, but I'm sure the time will come.

3.  Bargain alert!  I got this dress from the Fossil store for $39.  Original price is $175.  I'm totally going to make this face when I wear it.  I think I can get away with wearing it this weekend with a cardi since it is going to be 80 degrees tomorrow:(

4.  I have already purchased four Christmas presents!  I can't say what they are because the recipients might read this, but I am really proud of them and think my lucky friends and family are really going to love them:)  I'm getting a head start this year, I usually don't even think about Christmas until mid-November.  I hate when stores put out the Christmas wares in late summer, it cheapens to whole thing to me.

5.  Fun fact of the day:  According to the 2000 census, there are at least 2,376,206 people named Smith in the United States, making it the most common surname by a wide margin.

Race for the Cure 2012

Team Linda had a great showing at Race for the Cure Greater Nashville this weekend.  Our team doubled in size from last year and we raised over $1,000!

 Team Linda 2011

Team Linda 2012
Thank you to everyone who participated or made a donation.  After almost two years since diagnosis, Mom is doing great and we are so thankful.  I see big things for Team Linda in 2013 including combining with another local team, t-shirt sponsors and celebrating another year with no evidence of disease:)

Fun fact of the day:  Reno is further west than Los Angeles.

Things That Annoy Me #213

This week, at my favorite neighborhood sandwich shop, I was reminded of something that really gets on my nerves:

Why do people do this?  It dumbfounds me. The thing is clear so that you can see through it!  This perpetrator was an adult male who was at least 6 feet tall, yet he leaned right over the thing even grabbing on to the top of it so he could get more leverage and lean in a little more.  Have you no manners sir?  Have you no sense?

I think they should invent an electric sneeze guard, like an electric fence for cows.  So, when these fools get a little too close............................ zap:)  That should teach them.

Fun fact of the day:  In 1916, an elephant named Mary was executed by hanging in Erwin, Tennessee, for killing its circus trainer.  If you don't believe me, check this out.  Poor Mary.

I Love You Peter Alexander

I recently discovered that my television love got married this spring:(  I guess I can stop holding out now!  Oh Peter Alexander, you make the Today Show so much more awesome with your intriguing breaking news stories.

Fun fact of the day:  Montana is the only U.S. state that borders three different Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan).

Crazy Aunt Lora

Yesterday, this arrived in my mailbox.
Yesterday, this made me laugh.
Today, I am sharing it with you so that you may laugh too.  I guess Crazy Aunt Lora used to live in my house:)  Or, maybe her niece just got the wrong address altogether.  I took the liberty of blocking out my address so you crazies won't stalk me, and I also added the nifty cat face.  Because I'm pretty sure Crazy Aunt Lora has a couple of cats.
Does anyone know Lora Sejud?  She's expecting a letter.

Fun fact of the day:  A newborn giant panda is about the size of a stick of butter.

China Cabinet Anyone?

I found this beautiful china cabinet on Craigslist today.  What a steal at $85!  It's in Adamsville, but would be worth the drive.

Fun fact of the day:  Contrary to popular belief, there are no wild tigers in Africa.

I Don't Hate This

Let me preface this post by making a statement:  I don't like beer.  I think it tastes bad, and if I drink a whole 12oz or so I feel like I just ate an entire Pizza Hut large pizza.

This weekend I attended my first beer festival.  I actually had fun!  There was great company and I sampled a few different things.  All but one ended up being dumped in the parking lot.  So I declare Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan to be the BEST BEER IN THE WORLD:)

I am sure that almost no one agrees with me on this, and I couldn't tell you what it is that I really liked about it.  I just know it didn't taste like crap.  I probably still won't buy it at the grocery store, or order it in a bar, but when forced to drink a beer I could probably finish a whole one of these without gagging.

Congrats Lazy Magnolia, your beer isn't terrible:)

Fun fact of the day: There is a scale for measuring the spiciness of food. It is called the Scoville Heat Index. The spiciest pepper has over 1,000,000 Scoville units.
