Race for the Cure 2012

Team Linda had a great showing at Race for the Cure Greater Nashville this weekend.  Our team doubled in size from last year and we raised over $1,000!

 Team Linda 2011

Team Linda 2012
Thank you to everyone who participated or made a donation.  After almost two years since diagnosis, Mom is doing great and we are so thankful.  I see big things for Team Linda in 2013 including combining with another local team, t-shirt sponsors and celebrating another year with no evidence of disease:)

Fun fact of the day:  Reno is further west than Los Angeles.

Things That Annoy Me #213

This week, at my favorite neighborhood sandwich shop, I was reminded of something that really gets on my nerves:

Why do people do this?  It dumbfounds me. The thing is clear so that you can see through it!  This perpetrator was an adult male who was at least 6 feet tall, yet he leaned right over the thing even grabbing on to the top of it so he could get more leverage and lean in a little more.  Have you no manners sir?  Have you no sense?

I think they should invent an electric sneeze guard, like an electric fence for cows.  So, when these fools get a little too close............................ zap:)  That should teach them.

Fun fact of the day:  In 1916, an elephant named Mary was executed by hanging in Erwin, Tennessee, for killing its circus trainer.  If you don't believe me, check this out.  Poor Mary.

I Love You Peter Alexander

I recently discovered that my television love got married this spring:(  I guess I can stop holding out now!  Oh Peter Alexander, you make the Today Show so much more awesome with your intriguing breaking news stories.

Fun fact of the day:  Montana is the only U.S. state that borders three different Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan).

Crazy Aunt Lora

Yesterday, this arrived in my mailbox.
Yesterday, this made me laugh.
Today, I am sharing it with you so that you may laugh too.  I guess Crazy Aunt Lora used to live in my house:)  Or, maybe her niece just got the wrong address altogether.  I took the liberty of blocking out my address so you crazies won't stalk me, and I also added the nifty cat face.  Because I'm pretty sure Crazy Aunt Lora has a couple of cats.
Does anyone know Lora Sejud?  She's expecting a letter.

Fun fact of the day:  A newborn giant panda is about the size of a stick of butter.

China Cabinet Anyone?

I found this beautiful china cabinet on Craigslist today.  What a steal at $85!  It's in Adamsville, but would be worth the drive.

Fun fact of the day:  Contrary to popular belief, there are no wild tigers in Africa.

I Don't Hate This

Let me preface this post by making a statement:  I don't like beer.  I think it tastes bad, and if I drink a whole 12oz or so I feel like I just ate an entire Pizza Hut large pizza.

This weekend I attended my first beer festival.  I actually had fun!  There was great company and I sampled a few different things.  All but one ended up being dumped in the parking lot.  So I declare Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan to be the BEST BEER IN THE WORLD:)

I am sure that almost no one agrees with me on this, and I couldn't tell you what it is that I really liked about it.  I just know it didn't taste like crap.  I probably still won't buy it at the grocery store, or order it in a bar, but when forced to drink a beer I could probably finish a whole one of these without gagging.

Congrats Lazy Magnolia, your beer isn't terrible:)

Fun fact of the day: There is a scale for measuring the spiciness of food. It is called the Scoville Heat Index. The spiciest pepper has over 1,000,000 Scoville units.

Taco Test

This weekend I decided to take the advice of the Memphis Flyer, who obviously copied my Taco Top Five blog post for this month's cover story Tour De Tacos, and try one of the tacos they recommended.  On Friday I ordered the Cheese Steak Tacos at El Toro Loco.  I give them 3.5 stars.  The tortillas were good, the steak was good, the cheese was phenomenal, but the raw onions were not so good.  They were overpowering and chopped pretty finely so it was hard to pick them off.  I would suggest El Toro Loco switching to sauteed onions instead of raw to give it a more "cheese steak" taste.  I bet that would gain them another whole star on my scale.  These tacos may have made the top list for the Flyer but they did not crack my top 5.

Fun fact of the day:  The Arctic gets its name from the Greek word for "bear" (arctos) because of its proximity to the constellation "Ursa Major" ("great bear" in Latin).

Supermodel Work

On Sunday Kristen and I participated in the Memphis City Beautiful Curb Couture Trashion Show.  Though we were only "informal models" we got to wear some hats made from old screen doors, jewelry made of junk what-nots, and Kristen donned an aluminum foil bustier from the Oak Hall vintage collection circa 2011.  I was jealous.  We greeted people on the green carpet and took photos with attendees.  We even got a little coverage on ABC 24 and

There may be some print presence to come.  Media darlings I tell you.

This is my favorite photo of Kristen ever.

I look like Amy Winehouse.

Fun fact of the day:  It takes 90% less energy to recycle aluminium cans than creating new ones.

Taco Top Five

Since National Taco Day on Thursday I have been thinking about my favorite tacos, so I put together this top five list.  I've had a lot of tacos in my life, but these are the best of the best.

5.  Chicken Tacos - Fuel Food Truck, Memphis, TN
This mobile fiesta has be most delicious soft corn tortillas in town.  Fresh avocado and cilantro add tons of flavor to this new favorite.

4.  Crunchy Beef Taco - Guadalajara, Clarksville, TN
Talk about a classic!  Guadalajara is the best Mexican joint in my hometown and their tacos are hard to beat.  Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned tacos, like grandma used to make.  Neither of my grandmother's actually ever made tacos, but I'm sure some one's did.

3.  Brisket Taco - La Cocina, Seacrest Beach, FL
If you like spicy this is your taco.  The spiced up brisket is the star here.  Nothing like coming in off the beach when it's 99 degrees and filling up your bikini belly with fiery brisket that's been basting all morning:)  Gross?  No way.

2.  Tres Tacos - Molly's La Casita, Memphis, TN
The closest I can find to Taco John's in Memphis.

1.  Crunchy Beef Taco - Taco John's, Sikeston, MO (many locations)
The ultimate in fast food Mexican, that's a lot of awesomeness in a shell.  Don't forget the hot or mild sauce and an extra cup of cheese for dipping.  Don't worry about the grease that drips out the bottom when you take that first wonderful bite, it's not like you eat it everyday.

Fun fact of the day:  Nashville's Grand Ole Opry is the longest continuously running live radio program in the world. It has broadcast every Friday and Saturday night since 1925. And my grandmother still tunes in.

Happy NTD

Today is National Taco Day!  Sadly I wasn't prepared and did not wear my taco suit to work, nor do I have time to go out to lunch and have a delicious taco:(  I hope that you take time today to celebrate and give thanks for this ultimate south of the border gift.  I never met a taco I didn't like!  Here is a picture of me in my taco suit with Wayne and Garth taken last Halloween.  Guess what I am going to be this year?

Fun fact of the day:  America’s first Mexican-food celebrity was not Mexican. A man by the name of Buffalo Bill Cody earned the unique recognition after he started a Mexican restaurant outside of Madison Square Garden in 1886.
