What's Bugging Me: The Thursday Edition

Something that really irks me lately is celebrity product lines.  Martha Stewart making pots and pans and serving ware, great that's her thing.  The Kardashians putting their name on trashy, cheap juniors' clothes at Sears, that seems like a fit to me.

What I'm talking about is pseudo celebs putting their name on products that have absolutely nothing to do with what made them famous.  Here are some examples that really get to me:

Paula Deen furniture - what exactly qualifies Paula Deen to design a coffee table?  A recliner maybe, but not a coffee table.

Heidi Klum nursery decor - Heidi Klum is exactly who I think of when I dream of decorating a baby's room, said no one ever.

Bret Michaels dog clothes - because nothing says 80's rocker like a Pomeranian in a dress.  Are you kidding me?

All this stuff is just plain ole stupid.

Fun fact of the day:  Opossums don't "play dead." When frightened, they become overexcited and pass out.

I'm an Aunt!!!!!

Oh yes, it's true.  I am the proud aunt of my sweet little baby Wyatt.  He was born on February 16, which makes me almost 6 weeks late with this post.  Ooops.

He is the cutest, sweetest, most bestest baby in the world and I get all googly eyed when I look at him.  Just call me crazy aunt NeaNea.  It's fine, I've accepted it.

Here is a picture of the little guy's face while in my care.  He is totally impressed, can't you tell?

And here is a link to his first photo shoot:

Fun fact of the day:  Marie Osmond goes by her middle name. Her actual first name is Olive.

My friend Lucy got me hooked on The Walking Dead on AMC, I have no idea why but I love this show, but I do.  I was excited to find the Dead Yourself app and have been turning myself and my loved ones into zombies ever since.  Try it, you'll like it.

Fun fact of the day:  The General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park east of Visalia, California, is the largest tree in the world (by volume).

Happy Birthday to Me!

I had a birthday a couple of weeks ago, and even though I hate the thought of getting older, I had a great time celebrating!  Thanks to all my friends for putting together a lovely party for me:)

Last year I made the girls get all dressed up and go to Restaurant Iris (my favorite) for my birthday, so this year I wanted to change it up a bit and we went for greasy Mexican food and bowling.

I may or may not be really good at bowling.  Sorry boys! (not sorry)
*Disclaimer:  Frank would like for everyone to know that he had a torn ACL at the time of this post and this will never, ever happen again.

My sweet Mom got me not one, but two pairs of Kendra Scott earrings.  I love them.  She is the best.

Fun fact of the day:  The tallest known mountain in the solar system is Mars' Olympus Mons.  It  stands an incredible 15 miles tall.

This is Funny

If you would like to laugh this morning please click on this link.  If you have already seen this, my apologies, but I just can't get over how funny it is.

Number three gets me every time.

Fun fact of the day:  The popular dice game known as Yahtzee was created by a Canadian couple who played it aboard their yacht — hence the name.  I want a yacht.

Un-American Idol

Call me cold-hearted but I really can't stand that every single contestant on American Idol has some sort of sad sob-story to tell at the audition.  Like:
  • I had to take a medication that was supposed to make me not be able to have children and now I have a baby.
  • I had my tonsils removed.
  • When I was 12 my grandma came to live with us when she fell and broke her hip. (I made that one up).
I'm pretty sure everyone has to deal with things in their life that are unpleasant, unfortunately that's life.  I'm not sure why overcoming life's obstacles qualifies someone to win a singing contest?  And, if they are doing it for viewership or to make us want to root for the underdog, that isn't going to work if they are all underdogs.  Right?

Off soapbox.

On a lighter note, if you don't have Valentine's plans I would suggest that you hit up the Internet Cat Video Film Festival at the Brooks Museum.  Cat videos, crazy cat ladies, a DJ, and craft projects - all ingredients for an excellent way to celebrate your singleness.  Or bring a date, I'm sure guys would really enjoy this, it's not weird at all.

Fun fact of the day:  The Vince Lombardi Trophy has been made by Tiffany & Co since 1967.  It is sterling silver and weighs 7 pounds.

30 is the new 20.....................Not!

Here is a list of things that 30 somethings do that prove that 30 is not the new 20.

  1. You make an appointment with a podiatrist.  That's your feet, not your butt.
  2. Your favorite shoe designer is Clarks.
  3. You decide not to go somewhere because it's just "too cold out".
  4. You check the weather forecast multiple times per day.
  5. You buy reduced fat cheeses.
  6. You watch PBS.
  7. You have a library card and AAA card in your wallet.
  8. Your vacation plans are based on doing nothing instead of "what are we going to do?".
  9. You have no idea what you want for your birthday.

These are few - I'm sure I'll come across many more in the next few years.

Fun fact of the day:  Dalmations are born without spots.

And for my next trick......

I'll show you how to make chicken pot pie soup.

This is another recipe from my favorite food blog I've always been a fan of the saying "if you can read, you can cook", and this post is a prime example. Just follow the recipe and ta-da! Soup for you!

Voila.  Notice the cute bowl.

I give this recipe a 3.5 out of 5 stars, mostly because the best thing about chicken pot pie is the crust and this lighter recipe leaves it out all together. Skinny people don't eat crust.

Fun fact of the day: Three men served as president of the U.S. in 1841: William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Martin Van Buren.

I Heart San Francisco

Last week I spent five glorious days in San Francisco. I'm a sucker for beautiful architecture, history, and towns with character, and SF has all of these things. It's also a geographical wonder with the ocean, bay, vast forest and mini-mountains all in one 360 degree view. Top it off with a day trip to Napa, fine dining, a little shopping and the company of great friends and you have the makings of fabulous trip.

Here are some pictures from my adventure.

Fun fact of the day:  Jaleel White ("Steve Urkel") was the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in the video game character's mid-1990s cartoon.

Google Chrome Saves the Day

Guess who's up and running with Google Chrome?  It's me:)

Tonight, while trying to survive "Ice Storm 2013", I ate tacos.  What else is new?  I made these easy crock pot chicken and black bean tacos from my favorite food blog,

I also surprised myself by coming up with my very own Mexican rice recipe.  I took 1/2 cup brown rice, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup salsa and a little bit of cumin and cooked the rice per the package directions.  Ta Dah!  Mexican rice, looks legit right?  Tasted pretty good too.

Fun fact of the day:  Rhodes College moved to Memphis from my hometown of Clarksville in 1925.

The Beginning of the End?

Blogger no longer allows me to post photos.  No search box appears for me to download files from my computer.  So since no one wants to read a blog without pictures, I guess I'll take a little break.  If any one has any advice on what to do please let me know.

There will be no fun fact today:(

Two Important Birthdays

Most of you Memphians know that today would have been Elvis's 78th birthday, but I bet you didn't know that there is another January 8th birthday that is dear to me.  My sweet little Tootie dog would have turned 20 today:(  Now before you go thinking I'm all cray-cray, I do understand that she was just a dog.  But, she was my dog, I loved her dearly and I will miss that sweet little face for the rest of my days.

Fun fact of the day:  Asperger's syndrome is named for Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger, who described it in 1944. He called his patients "Little Professors."

Thursday, January 3, 2013

Here are my resolutions for 2013:
  • Loose weight, go to the gym, eat more veggies, yada yada yada
  • Stop spending so much money on unnecessary clothing items (thank goodness the definition of unnecessary is debatable)
  • Learn how to pay my cable bill online
One of these shouldn't be that difficult.

Fun fact of the day:  Marie Curie's notebooks are still radioactive.  If you don't know who Marie Curie is, I just can't help you.

Another Donkey Post

Meet Monica Lewinsky, a best dressed donkey nominee.

This is not a great picture of Monica, but if you are ever in St. Thomas you should look her up.  She and her owner hang out on top of one of the touristy lookout places and you can take a picture with her for ten bucks.  Totally worth it.

Fun fact of the day:  Only about one-fifth of the world's largest desert, the Sahara, is covered with sand; the remainder is made up of rock formations.
